Dry Winter Skin? Here’s What I Eat to Stay Hydrated
Our giddiness grows as spring feels closer day-by-day – and that makes us even more motivated to bust out of a winter skin rut so we are ready for the new season with dewy skin from the inside out.
When it comes to skin care, what’s in our fridge matters – after all, it’s true “you are what you eat”.
My daily skincare routine always includes foods that target what I need in that season. In the winter I avoid dehydrating foods like chips and crackers. And when skin is dry and dehydrated, fine lines are more pronounced, so I try to stay on top of my daily water intake, opting for more room temperature water. I start the morning with a warm glass of lemon water – it’s soothing and acts as a stimulant for the liver.
So, what to eat to heal your dry skin from the inside out? Start with healthy fats. Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids moisturize skin from the inside out, lower inflammation and keep skin supple. I love salmon at least 1 to 3 times a week, an avocado a day and a spoonful of coconut oil to make sure I’m getting what I need. I love eating oatmeal every morning and I’ll add flaxseeds and walnuts for an extra dose of omega 3’s in the winter.
For a sweet snack during the day – pineapple is also high in vitamin C, which helps in the formation of collagen, a protein that helps grow new skin and blood vessels. It’s one of my favorite beauty foods – and it naturally hydrates in winter because a ripe pineapple is full of juice.
As you’re eating your regular meals throughout the day, you can think about just adding some of these moisturizing foods into your diet, whether it’s eating an avocado as a snack with some olive oil and sea salt with lemon, or throwing it into your morning smoothie. Keep these foods stocked throughout the week so you can grab them and go when you’re in a hurry, too.
End your days with a cup of herbal tea for anti-inflammatory benefits for skin. I love VOYA organic teas for so many reasons and this is one of them. For some extra beauty sleep, VOYA Chamomile Calm is perfect for a nighttime tea that soothes and calms both skin and body.
